The ashes of the original Camp Aldrich Dining Hall, a building storied with weddings, reunions, summer camps and much more, have been removed to make room for a new facility for the next generation of central Kansas families to enjoy.

The foundation of the new dining hall has been poured and basement walls are being finished. The scheduled completion date is December, with an opening date of April, 2016.

The original Dining Hall burned down due to accidental causes in April of 2014.

The SWAG�ϼ� Music Department awards 11 scholarships every year at about $1,000 each and 20 performance awards for non-music major students, which enables them to participate in ensembles.�� This could not be done without the community’s support of the annual Music Endowment Concert, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 4 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The SWAG�ϼ� Theatre Department will hold its last performance of the school year, the Thespian Showcase, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

SWAG�ϼ� Theatre students will perform monologues, scenes, musical theatre, improvisation and original work. The SWAG�ϼ� Theatre Department will hand out year-end acting and technical awards. Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be provided at a reception following the performances and ceremony.

SWAG�ϼ� will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157.�� The recital is free.

SWAG�ϼ� will host its eighth annual Sidewalk Art Contest May 4-6 on the sidewalk outside the Shafer Art Gallery.

The contest is open to all residents of SWAG�ϼ� County.�� Artists wishing to participate need to register and pick up their free chalk at the Shafer Gallery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any of the three days.�� Artists must have their work completed by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6.

The SWAG�ϼ� Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23 in the Shafer Art Gallery.

The 24-piece orchestra is comprised of high school, college and adult members of the SWAG�ϼ� and Pawnee county areas.

The Golden Belt Community Foundation awarded Central Kansas Upward Bound a $500 grant to bring recycling to the SWAG�ϼ� campus

"It's nice that SWAG�ϼ� now has the option for recycling and the individual cans makes it a lot easier," SWAG�ϼ� student LiErin McCune-streit said.��"It's good for the earth, and this is the only one we have."

SWAG�ϼ� art students will line the walls of the Shafer Art Gallery with their work during the “SWAG�ϼ� Student Art Exhibit” juried art show from April 13 through May 2.�� The reception will be Friday, April 17 from 6-8 p.m.

Shafer Art Gallery Director Dave Barnes said the student exhibit is an important part of encouraging young artists.
