SWAG�ϼ� will host its 10th annual Sidewalk Art Contest May 3 and 4 on the sidewalk outside the Shafer Art Gallery.

The contest is open to SWAG�ϼ� students and local high school students. Artists can register and pick up their free chalk at the Shafer Gallery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on either of the two days. Artists must have their work completed by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4.

SWAG�ϼ� art students received recognition at this year’s SWAG�ϼ� Student Exhibition at the Shafer Gallery on April 21. This exhibit will run through May 12. Those interested in experiencing the art can visit the Shafer Gallery 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

SWAG�ϼ� will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157.�� The recital is free and open to the public.

The SWAG�ϼ� Music Department awards 11 scholarships every year at about $1,000 each and 20 performance awards for non-music major students, which enables them to participate in ensembles.�� This could not be done without the community’s support of the annual Music Endowment Concert, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 1 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

After conducting more than 400 concerts and directing 45 musicals over his 38-year career, SWAG�ϼ� Vocal Instructor Vern Fryberger is ready to step off stage and begin his retirement.

But, it’s not because he’s tired of the vocation.

The SWAG�ϼ� Board of Trustees gathered Tuesday evening for its regular meeting and discussed one of its eight overarching goals, known as ENDs. This month’s focus was on “Work Preparedness,” which deals primarily with ensuring students are fully capable to handle the demands of their chosen careers once employed.

SWAG�ϼ�’s Nursing Associate Degree Program has been awarded full accreditation through 2022 by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) as of March of 2017.

Four original plays selected from the SWAG�ϼ� Theatre Department’s Original Playwright Contest will take the stage in a one-night performance at 7:30 p.m. April 27. Admission is free. This is the first year SWAG�ϼ� Theatre Department has presented this series.

SWAG�ϼ� invites members of SWAG�ϼ� County Young Professionals, and those interested in joining, to enjoy food, drinks, music and excellent door prizes at its second annual YP mixer from 6-8 p.m.��April 28 in the Shafer Art Gallery on campus. A brief presentation will begin at about 7 p.m.

The meal is a choice of pastas and sauces with bread and a salad. Wine and beer will be provided by the SWAG�ϼ� Foundation. Guests must be 21 or older to enter. IDs will be checked at the door.

Area high school students from Ellinwood, Great Bend, Solomon, Strafford, Larned and Hoisington came to SWAG�ϼ� to get hands-on experience from art professionals and participate in a juried art exhibit Thursday, April 6.

This year the exhibit and workshop was sponsored by the SWAG�ϼ� County Arts Council (BCAC).
