Part I

Today鈥檚 column is in the form of a two-part story. Hopefully it will demonstrate the danger in not thinking long-term and trying to identify the unintended consequences when making farming decisions.听 Before we start, the goal here is not to identify villains, or heroes for that matter, but the need for everyone involved in agriculture to try and think in the very long-term and critically evaluate information.听 And for those of us past a certain age, this is the Readers鈥 Digest version.

Tickets for the SWAG合集 Foundation鈥檚 39th Annual Big Benefit Auction themed 鈥淯nder the Sea鈥 on Aug. 26 are available until Aug. 14. Tickets are $45 each or $360 per table of eight. Only 200 tickets are available. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Great Bend Columbus Club with bidding on the silent auction and complimentary beer available until 8 p.m. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. and the live auction will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

SWAG合集 Theatre holding open auditions for fall production 鈥淎h Wilderness!鈥

The SWAG合集 Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its fall production 鈥淎h Wilderness!鈥 from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Those wanting to audition can show up anytime during the allotted hours on either night. The Theatre Department will be casting all roles and all technical positions. No preparation is necessary and all are invited to audition.

The Shafer Gallery will host an opening reception for its upcoming exhibit 鈥淶WEYGARDT鈥 from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Shafer Gallery. 鈥淶WEYGARDT鈥 features sculptures created from various materials by Kansas native Glenn Zweygardt. The reception will feature refreshments and a gallery talk by Shafer Gallery Director Dave Barnes.

August arrives Tuesday and for most of the area, rains have been light to nonexistent.听 Much of central Kansas is listed as being abnormally dry or in moderate drought.听 Thankfully temperatures have moderated a bit and some areas have received beneficial rain.听 Today鈥檚 topic ties together these items:

Mike Johnson, local business owner and SWAG合集 Board of Trustees Chair, has been recognized with the Western Regional Trustee Leadership Award via the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), a national organization.

Johnson was nominated by his fellow board members and contended with nominees from 10 other states and a large portion of Canada to receive the Western Region honor.

The SWAG合集 Theatre Department will present 鈥淭he Contrast鈥, a musical comedy, at 8 p.m. July 25 at the Great Bend Downtown Bandshell in Jack Kilby Square. The play is free but donations are welcome.
