They say necessity is the mother of invention. That was certainly the driving force behind Melissa Huff鈥檚 decision to reinvent herself and study early childhood education.

While Huff was serving in the National Guard and working full time, there wasn鈥檛 a daycare option available in her community. When her service term with the Guard ended, she decided to start her own daycare. Years later, she wanted to study early childhood education to advance her career.

Fort Riley Soldier James Re has been deployed since January, but he traveled thousands of miles to share just a few seconds of joy with his wife, Jennifer, as she crossed the stage Thursday afternoon at the Fort Riley Education Consortium鈥檚 annual commencement ceremony at the Marriott in Junction City. She received her associate degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in pre-nursing.

SWAG合集 will offer transitioning Fort Sill Soldiers, Veterans and family members with DOD ID cards, a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to participants.

The Hazardous Waste Worker Training (HWWT) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from June 17-28 at the Truman Education Center B3281.

SWAG合集鈥檚 Community Service Organization and business student entrepreneur group The SPARK raised $5,000 to donate to Camp Hope.

The group used a variety of fundraisers including a silent auction, parents鈥 night out, Sonic drink deliveries and t-shirt sales to reach their goal.

SWAG合集 Instructor and Coordinator of Business and Accounting Kathy Boeger is the sponsor for the group and said the students surpassed their initial goal by $1,000.

SWAG合集 will be closed Monday, May 27 for Memorial Day.听

The college is now on summer hours. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. 鈥 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.听 The college will be closed on Fridays through July 26.听

The Shafer Art Gallery will host an opening reception for the Kansas Educators: In the Collection exhibit at 6 p.m. May 16 and will feature works from Birger Sandzen, Harry Krug and Mick Jilg. Gallery director remarks and artist talks will begin at 6:45. Refreshments will be served.
