SWAG�ϼ�

Last week, we briefly discussed the importance of soil microorganisms and some invertebrates in the soil ecosystem and their importance to plant communities. Whether the native plant community, from grasslands and forests, or our crop plants.

Not only does the SWAG�ϼ� Foundation award hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to SWAG�ϼ� students each year, but it also aims to help students succeed in all scholarship endeavors and is offering a thorough but easily digestible scholarship workshop March 5 at 2 and 6 p.m. in the Academic Development Center in the SWAG�ϼ� Library, room 136 or via zoom at .

The SWAG�ϼ� Theatre Department will present the time-honored classic musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” by Jeremy Sams, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29 and March 1 and 2, and at 2 p.m. March 2 and 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium, and tickets are only available in advance.

Today, as we head towards spring, and all that it means for agriculture, let’s take time to discuss the soil as an ecosystem.��

SWAG�ϼ� has a long history of providing affordable and accessible higher education to SWAG�ϼ� County for over 50 years, and thanks to a collaborative study with the Docking Institute at Fort Hays State University, the College continues to confirm the economic benefit of the college to the county.

SWAG�ϼ� has named 245 students to the President’s List for the fall 2023 semester. To qualify for this honor students must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a grade point average of 4.0 on a 4.0 or "A" letter scale.

SWAG�ϼ� has named 314 students to the Dean’s List for the fall 2023 semester. To qualify for this honor, students must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.99 on a 4.0 or "A" letter scale.

A major topic of interest in our area, especially with Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira in our area, is conserving groundwater.��

Those wanting to help a great cause and catch some exciting basketball action will have the opportunity to do both as part of SWAG�ϼ�’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter’s Food Drive from 2-5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Kirkman Gym during the Cougar basketball games, and those bringing five items or more will gain free entry.

SWAG�ϼ� will host an informational fair about a new statewide education apprenticeship program created by the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE) from 6:30-8 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the Cavanaugh Room in the SWAG�ϼ� Library, and a virtual fair will be held Feb. 26.
