Keynote Speaker - Sarah Lamm
"Kansas Skies to Space Science"
Sarah Lamm is a Ph.D. student at the University of Kansas, where she uses lasers and machine learning tools to study other planets. She focuses on materials that are similar to what we find on Mars and on icy moons. By using a laser technique called Raman spectroscopy, she helps scientists figure out what different rocks and minerals are made of. She has completed multiple research internships, including three at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), two at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and two at the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI). At LANL, she worked with the ChemCam Instrument Team on NASA's curiosity Mars Rover. At NASA JPL and LPI, she developed and optimized machine learning methods to enhance the classification accuracy of iron oxide and sulfide minerals. In addition to her internships, she has participated as an analog astronaut at the Mars Desert Research Station for two weeks.听

Breakout Session Activities:
Breakout session activities are being updated as information becomes available.听
In this session, participants will practice the power of language and the written word in STEM fields while playing the game WORDinary STEM.
In this session, participants will learn to use light to take better photos. Learn to make portraits eye-catching, flattering, and /or dramatic.听
The foundation of best management practices in the beef cattle industry is built on the science explaining why producers do the things they do to be successful.
In this session, participants will learn about the impact energy drinks, drug use, and healthy diet have on our overall health.
In this session, participants will get an overview of sustainable approaches to agriculture, students will learn about subjects like soil fertility, garden design and management, native plants and their functions, and more. The participants will brainstorm solutions to long-term problems facing farmers today and tomorrow.听
In this hands-on session, students will apply creative problem-solving strategies to design and build clay structures engineered to resist the pull of gravity. Through testing and iteration, they will explore innovation, resilience, problem-solving and they physics of stability.听
In this session, participants will learn about virtual reality systems and how we are using them in the military and civilian world now and how they will be used in the future for training, medical procedures, etc.听
In this session, participants will learn about what it takes to be a zookeeper, about the many different positions there are at zoos and other animal care facilities and meet one of our animal education ambassadors.听
In this session, participants will use clues to find each Avenger's graph and linear equation to solve locks to open a breakout box and collect a reward.听
In the session, participants will see the human body as never before using dissection Anatomage table with six full body sized cadavers. You can try your hand at performing kinesiology functions, digital pregnancy - human embryonic development by interacting with 31 week fetus inside the mother's body and observing delivery of the baby, an angioplasty as you guide a wire and balloon through the arteries into the heart or remove structures one at a time and watch the breathing heart while performing ECG. We will use the Anatomage Tablet, the world's only fully segmented real human 3D anatomy portable device.听
In this session, participants will learn the differences between planting no=till versus tillage, and the effect of utilizing cover crops in a farming operation. Participants will also learn about the importance of soil conservation.听
In this session, participants will explore the fundamental principle that the mind and body are intrinsically linked. Through guided activities, this session will introduce accessible movement practices for combating stress, strengthening focus, and cultivating a greater sense of well-being.听
In this session, Participants will learn how Pharmacist play an important role in helping people get the best results from their medications. Participants听will learn what it takes to be a pharmacist, how the sciences play an integral part, and walk through a day in the life of a hospital pharmacist. With over 100+ career pathways to choose from, come learn if pharmacy is right for you!
In this session, participants will learn about 375 of the 450 bird species found in Kansas have been documented at Cheyenne Bottoms. merlin is a great citizen science tool used to identify and document birds. Tablets will be provided for student use. Students will ID birds using mounts, photos set up along a nature hike, any live birds witnessed on SWAG合集 campus, and using bird song calls. As time allows, we will delve into some other great apps like iNaturalist, Seek, and Star Chart.听
In this session, participants will be introduced to the diversity and importance of insects in agriculture and everyday life. It will highlight insect biology and explain the differences between beneficial insects, such as pollinators and natural predators, and harmful pests that threaten crops. The focus will be on aphids and an example of an insect pest and sorghum or corn as their host crops to demonstrate pest management strategies and plant - insect interactions. Through a hands-on exercise, participants will explore insect interactions and test an ecological hypothesis related to plant resistance and biological control by natural enemies. in this activity, you will also learn how plants release chemical signals (volatiles) that attract natural enemies to help reduce aphid populations.听
In this session, participants will learn how artificial intelligence and immersive experience design are transforming training, research, and the entertainment industry within the K-AIRES Center at K-State Salina. Dr. Oetken will showcase emerging technologies that accelerate prototyping, personalized learning, and scale complex, high fidelity experiences. The talk will also highlight how future jobs and careers will be shaped by new ways of designing digital worlds and immersive experiences.
